Management: What's New?

The industrial transportation manager makes
arrangements for his or her firm's fright
transportation needs. He or she stands between
shipper's needs and available carriers. In a system
analyst's chart of nodes and links in the supply
chain, the firm's transportation manager is
responsible for the links. Within the U.S. economy,
purchases of freight transportation are
approximately 6 percent of GDP. Despite the domestic
transportation manager's pivotal role in the supply
chain's day-to-day functioning, discussion of this
role receives relatively little attention in
academic journals.
